The government will construct nine 20-storey buildings at Motijheel Government Officers Quarters in the city to arrange accommodation for 10,000 families under a master plan.
Of the nine buildings, four will be inaugurated next month where 532 officers will be housed.
Construction work of the rest five buildings will start soon.
Of these buildings, three have eight units in each floor and one has four units in each floor.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain disclosed these while inspecting the progress of construction work of the officers' quarters at Motijheel on Wednesday.
The minister said 2,980 families live in 164 three/four-storey buildings on 22.4 acres of land.
Nine 20-storey buildings will be constructed in the area by demolishing these old buildings.
For this, a master plan has been prepared and families of 10,000 government officers will be accommodated in the new buildings.
The Public Works Department (PWD) will construct the buildings. "Only 8.0 per cent public servants get housing facility now. The government has set a target to increase it up to 40 per cent during its present tenure," he said.
Mr Mosharraf said the PWD has already completed construction of four 20-storey buildings at Azimpur.
In the tenement house, families of 114 secretaries will be accommodated in four 20-storey buildings.
Three more buildings will be opened for 114 grade-1 officials in November at Eskaton in the city.
