Nixon Chy gets eight-week anticipatory bail

The High Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail for eight weeks to independent lawmaker from Faridpur-4 constituency Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, well known as Nixon Chowdhury, in a case filed on charge of violating the election code of conduct during the Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad by-election.

The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed in this regard.

The court asked Nixon Chowdhury not to influence the witnesses during the investigation of the case and not to pose any kind of threats to the local administration. The court also asked him to co-operate the investigation officer.

Lawyers Dr Shahdeen Malik and Monjur Alam took part in the hearing on behalf of Nixon Chowdhury, while Deputy Attorney General Jannatul Ferdous Rupa represented the state.

In the hearing, Dr Shahdeen Malik said that the case statement mentioned a call recording. But none can record telephone conversations of others without the permission of the home ministry and such recording without the permission is a crime as per the law, added the lawyer.

Nixon Chowdhury came to the High Court early on the day and was present in the courtroom during the hearing of the case.

Earlier on Sunday his lawyers filed the petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

The Election Commission filed the case with Charbhadrasan Police Station on October 15 against Nixon Chowdhury for violating the election code of conduct during the Charbhadrasan Upazila Parishad by-elections held on October 10.
