Home Adviser to DB cops

No more arrest in plainclothes

Must wear vest, show ID cards to make arrest

FE REPORT | January 07, 2025 00:00:00

No more arrest in plainclothes, Home Adviser Lt-General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) Monday directed detective police, in the wake of disclosure of weird happenings in plainclothes operations.

"They must wear jackets and show their identity cards while arresting someone," he said while speaking to the media after visiting the police Detective Branch (DB) office in Dhaka's Minto Road.

He also said in a straight-forward manner that there will be no more 'Ayna Ghar (mirror room)' and 'Bhat-er hotel (restaurant that serves cuisines to supplement plain rice dish)' at DB office.

Many people began referring the DB office as Bhat-er Hotel after Harun-Or-Rashid, the former additional commissioner of DB, started the practice of serving food to detainees or visitors. He would share those photos on social media afterwards.

Reports say Ayna Ghar was the secret detention centre located in the office of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence.

"I also asked them not to do anything beyond the law. Even if I ask them to carry out any unlawful order, then they must not follow that," the adviser of the post-uprising interim government further said referring to DB officials.

Replying to a query, he said currently there is no Ayna Ghar at the DB office.

"I urged the DB personnel that the pond inside the DB office must be neat and clean like a mirror, he added.

The home affairs adviser firmly stated that the interim government did not recommend anyone during recruitment of police and sub-inspectors (SIs).

He asked journalists to reveal if he ever commits any corruption, but emphasised that they must publish the truth.

"Today I visited DB office as part of my routine duties. We have discussed on how to improve law and order situation further. The present situation in the country is satisfactory. But the main aim is to improve it further and we have discussed on that," he maintained.

Regarding the growing number of incidents of mugging in the capital, he said, "I wouldn't deny the incidents of mugging, but at the same time we are also nabbing the muggers."

He mentioned that the law enforcers are conducting drives against the muggers.

"Now we have to maintain communication both with the Myanmar government and also with the Arakan Army."

He mentioned that such a communication is necessary as currently Arakan does not have any representatives from the Myanmar's government. "Still now we are considering Myanmar government as the legitimate government. Our aim is to secure our border. We are alert so that our border remains calm and quiet," he also said.

We have full control over on our frontier with Myanmar," he mentioned referring to the border with Myanmar's Rakhine state.

He praised the role of Bangladeshi media for the angle of news published to counter news aired published by Indian media.

He said that 321 trainee sub-inspectors were dismissed following their involvement of breaching discipline at Sarda Police Academy in Rajshahi.
