Some officials and employees of the Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC (IBBPLC) staged a demonstration in front of its headquarters in the capital on Tuesday, demanding their due promotions and benefits.
They also demanded that no staff members who joined the IBBPLC after 2017 would be allowed to stay in the bank job.
They said they were being deprived of different benefits over the last more than a decade after changing the ownership and members of the board of the bank.
During the demonstration, some people destroyed the pictures of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
They demanded punishment of S Alam Group's high officials and their officials appointed to the IBBPLC.
The IBBL managing director and the deputy managing director did not come to the office on the day, officials said.
The FE tried to contact the IBBPLC MD and its spokesperson, but they were not available on phone.
Meanwhile, S Alam Group, a business conglomerate of the country, took over share of the bank which now reached a majority portion.
Earlier, in late 2016 and early 2017, S Alam bought a significant amount of IBBPLC shares through a number of companies virtually taking control of the bank.
The bank has allegedly been in crisis and controversy since the takeover by the S Alam Group.
The bank is now facing an acute liquidity crisis forcing it to stop lending large loans.
The IBBPLC's shareholding by sponsors-directors came down to 41.90 per cent at the end of June from 55.06 per cent in December last year, according to a monthly report for June submitted to the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) last year.
