Non-MPO teachers suspend sit-in on govt assurance

FE Report | March 25, 2019 00:00:00

The teachers and employees demanding their inclusion in the monthly payment order (MPO) list suspended their movement on Sunday afternoon after the government assumed them of meeting their demand.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Senior Secretary of Secondary and Higher Secondary Division Md Sohorab Hossain met the agitating teachers around 3:30 pm and requested them to call off their demonstration.

They were also assured that the government was considering their demand by following the due procedure.

"It will take one to two months for MPO enlistment and it will be included in the budget for the next fiscal year," president of Non-MPO Educational Institutions Teachers and Employees Federation Principal Golam Mahmudunnabi Dollar said quoting the education minister as saying.

The agitating teachers and employees suspended their demonstration for one month upon assurance from the government representatives, he added.

"If our demand is not met within one month, we will go for tough movement," he warned.

A team of agitating teachers is scheduled to hold talks with the education minister and the secretary today (Monday) to discuss the details including their demand of an appointment with the Prime Minister, sources said.

Agitating teachers and employees made the announcement at their sit-in programme that continued for the fifth consecutive day in front of the National Press Club in the city.

Teachers and employees from over five thousand non-MPO academic institutions had been staging demo to press home their demand.

However, some teachers fell sick during the protests. Earlier on Thursday, police foiled a move of the agitators to meet the Prime Minister.

In July 2018, the teachers called off their demo upon assurance from the government that it would consider their demand. As no progress in this regard had been made, the non-MPO teachers and employees again took to the streets.
