A three-day Rupayan-NRB Global Convention and Bangladesh Trade Fair ended on Monday in New York with a call to brand the country globally by non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs).

President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) Nihad Kabir made the call at a discussion on 'Investment opportunities in Bangladesh and exploring Bangladeshi products in North American market' on the third day of the fair.

She said Bangladesh is progressing fast on many fronts, creating potential investment opportunities where the NRBs can invest and get back the returns or largely contribute to the economy.

"NRBs can contribute greatly for branding Bangladesh in the global arena," the MCCI president said.

Economist Dr. Nazrul Islam moderated the discussion.

Other speakers in the programme include director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Priti Chakraborty, Chairman and Managing Director of Rishal Group of Industries Sakhawat Hossain and Acting Editor of The Financial Express (FE) Shahiduzzaman Khan.

In the discussion on 'Bangladesh, Looking Forward' on the concluding day of the trade fair, Mr Khan said Bangladesh's shape will be changed remarkably if the NRB World Wide Inc. entities come up with branding the country in a planned way.

He said Bangladeshis have already positioned themselves well in most countries of the world.

"The economy will get fruitful results if trade bodies like the FBCCI and the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) work together with them for achieving the goal," Mr. Khan said.

Writer Ahmad Mazhar and journalist Dr Akhil Poddar also spoke at the discussion, moderated by journalist Hasan Ferdous.

The speakers were also optimistic about the country's socio-economic progress in the coming days because of the vibrant young generation who would bring positive changes in the ruling system.

The third discussion was dedicated to 'Finding Perfect Home of Bangladesh for NRBs'.

US-Bangla Housing Chief Executive Officer-cum-Managing Director Golam Mostofa and Rishal Group of Industries Chairman-cum-Managing Director Sakhawat Hossain, among others, spoke at the event.

Journalist Nini Wahed chaired the fourth discussion on 'Caring for the Elderly' where speakers hailed Bangladeshi people's contribution in the area in the North American region and urged the NRBs to invest in old homes of Bangladesh for taking care of senior citizens.

Other discussions on "Immigration challenges for NRBs" and "Women entrepreneurs: Making a Difference," were chaired by Barrister Aftab Ahmed and journalist Ahmad Mazhar respectively.

Apart from Bangladesh's Rupayan Group and Purbachal American City, a total of 35 apparel firms took part in the trade fair.
