Onion prices will ease soon: Govt

FE REPORT | October 07, 2020 00:00:00

The prices of onion will shortly ease in the market with the arrival of imported onions, the commerce ministry said on Tuesday.

The commerce ministry in a statement said presently, there is an available stock of widely-consumed spice. "So, there is no reason to get panicked over the onion price," it added.

Following a sudden hike in onion prices, the government has taken multiple measures to keep its stock, supply and prices stable in the market.

The commerce ministry has strengthened its market monitoring led by the local administrations concerned including Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection.

"The government will take stern action against hoarding and artificial crisis of onion as per the existing legal provisions of the country," the statement reads.

Imported onions through public and private arrangements have started to arrive in the country. Currently, there is a sufficient stock of local onions in the country. Local producers have increased sales volume in the market. For this, the supply of the key spice has risen in the market, according to the press release.

Now there is no deficit of the item and the prices of onion will decrease further after entire imported onions enter the market, it added.

Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) under the commerce ministry is selling onions through trucks as well as e-commerce platforms across the country aiming to provide onions to consumers at affordable prices.

To meet the demand, the scope of selling onion at Tk 30 per kg is being expanded further.
