The price of onions increased by Tk 10-15 a kg in last two days which traders attributed to higher import cost and a depleting stock of local crops.
Local onions hit Tk 130-140 and imported Indian Tk 115-120 a kg on Friday in the kitchen markets and at groceries.
Anisur Rahman, a spice trader at Rayerbazar-Beribadh in the city, has told the FE that prices have increased by Tk 8.0-10 a kg in the districts like Rajbari, Gopalganj, Pabna and Faridpur.
Imported Indian onions also witnessed a price hike by Tk 6.0-8.0 a kg amid a surge in import costs, he said.
Meanwhile, prices of vegetables declined to some extent as brinjal was retailed at Tk 100-130 a kg against Tk 120-150 a kg earlier.
Gourd varieties including pointed, ridge, teasel, sponge and snake gourd showed a drop in price of Tk 10-20 a kg on Friday.
Pointed gourd was being retailed at the highest Tk 80 a kg. Tomato price declined by Tk 20 a kg and retailed at Tk 200-220 a kg. Beef prices declined to Tk 700-760 from Tk 740-780 in most city areas.
Habibur Rahman, a meat seller at Mohammadpur in the city, said prices of cattle declined to some extent amid a cut in extortion on highways.
He added demand for the item also declined which also contributed to the static market trend.
However, a trader from Dimla in Nilphamari has told the FE that many cattle rearers were selling their cows for fear of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
He said last year the disease affected 25-30 per cent of the cattle in the region between September and December which pushed the price of beef down.
