People’s Leasing staffers demand payment of dues

FE Report | August 08, 2019 00:00:00

The employees of People’s Leasing and Financial Services (PLFS) have demanded their dues, including salary and festival bonus.

They are in apprehension of their job losses following the start of the company's liquidation process.

The staffers made their demand on Wednesday at a press briefing at Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) in the capital, Dhaka.

On the day, they also formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club to realise their demands.

On June 27, finance ministry gave the go-ahead to the proposal of liquidating PLFSL, considering its fragile financial statement.

As part of liquidation, the central bank has already appointed a provisional liquidator to take charge of the assets of the company.

"We're not getting salary since last June. Some 178 employees of the company are in fear of losing jobs," said PLFS senior vice-president Md Harun Ur Rashid.

He said the employees have placed the demand for paying dues to the liquidator appointed by the central bank. "But any initiative has not been taken so far to pay our dues," Mr Rashid told the briefing.

The employees pleaded with the government authorities concerned to pay other financial benefits as per the service rules.

Earlier, PLFS decided to suspend the trading of its shares from July 14, 2019.

On August 06, the company's board of directors decided to extend the suspension period of its share trading for a further 15 days from August 13.

PLFS, presently a 'Z' category company, was listed with stock exchanges in 2005.

Its sponsor-directors hold 23.21 per cent, institutes 9.50 per cent, foreigners 0.19 per cent and general shareholders 67.10 per cent shares as of June 30, 2019.
