Per capita CO2 emission rises

FE Report | April 18, 2019 00:00:00

Per capita carbon emission in Bangladesh has increased alarmingly from 0.85 tonnes of CO2eq in 2005 to 0.98 tonnes of CO2eq in 2012.

Climate experts disclosed this at the launch of the 'Third National Communication of Bangladesh to the UNFCCC' report in CIRDAP auditorium on Wednesday.

Carbon emissions are increasing gradually, portraying the trends in current economic growth, they observed.

Environment, forests and climate change ministry hosted the programme, highlighting the process of creating an inventory of greenhouse gas sources.

It described the process of collecting systematic data and proper analysis for the report.

Experts said time is ripe for Bangladesh to pay attention to climate change mitigation along with adaptation as it is heading towards a middle-income country.

"Compared to other countries, Bangladesh emits a relatively little amount of greenhouse gases for anthropogenic factors," environment, forests and climate change minister Md Shahabuddin said as the chief guest.

The country does not have any international obligation for climate change mitigation, he cited.

PKSF chairman and climate change specialist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad in his keynote said, "Mitigation issue is not obligatory for us due to low pollution than developed countries."

"But we can still reduce emissions by increasing energy efficiency in energy, transport and industrial sectors," he went on to say.

Kyoko Yokosuka, deputy resident representative of UNDP Bangladesh, said adaptation and mitigation measures proposed in the report would be useful for sustainable development goals and green growth.
