Trial to be finished at the earliest, says home minister

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the house of rape victim Ramisa at Pallabi in the city on Thursday night.

He inquired about the tragic incident and assured the victim’s family of meting out stringent punishment to the accused in the shortest possible time.

During the visit, he was accompanied by Home minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

Seven-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa Akhter was murdered after rape in an apartment of her building on Tuesday morning.

Soon after the incident, the police managed to arrest Sohel Rana, the accused in the case, from Narayanganj.

Earlier on Thursday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said trial in the brutal rape and murder case

would be completed at the earliest possible time.

"We can assure the nation that the exemplary trial in the Ramisa murder case will be completed swiftly through the prompt submission of the charge sheet. However, we cannot comment on the punishment," he said.

The minister was responding to questions on the Ramisa case at a press briefing at his ministry.

"Police have been taking the highest level of action in all heinous crimes since the BNP government assumed office, ensuring rapid arrests and investigations. You cannot point to any such crime since we took office where the matter was ignored," said the minister.

Talking about the Ramisa case, he said the prime accused, Sohel Rana, was arrested within 24 hours of the incident along with his wife.

The accused has given a confessional statement before the court.

On the other hand, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman directed on Thursday the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner to submit a final investigation report on the brutal rape and murder case of seven-year-old Ramisa Akhter within a week.

He also assured that the government will pursue fast-tracked legal steps for exemplary trial of the perpetrators.

On a Tuesday (May 19) morning in Pallabi (Mirpur-11), seven-year-old Ramisa was lured into an adjacent apartment, raped, and murdered.

Her attacker dismembered her and concealed the body.

Later, police arrested the prime suspect Sohel at Fatullah area of Narayanganj on the same day of the incident.

Meanwhile protests against the killing of Ramisa were reported at different parts of the capital.

Students and guardians of Popular Model High School, and local people held a protest rally at Kalshi, Mirpur area in the city on Thursday.

They demanded execution of the killers in public without delay.

The protestors called upon the government to complete the trial swiftly and award death penalty to the killers of Ramisa Akhter.

Another group of protesters staged a demonstration in the capital on the day, demanding the death penalty for perpetrators of child rape, murder, and sexual assault.

The protest, which was held under the banner "Justice For Ramisa", took place in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh at around 3:30pm.

They demanded exemplary punishment (death penalty) of the killer so that none could dare to commit such heinous killing in future.

During the programme, the demonstrators chanted various slogans, including "We want death penalty, death penalty for rapists" and "No place for rapists in my Sonar Bangla."
