Pry teacher candidates' demo

Police use force to disperse protesters at Secretariat

FE REPORT | February 17, 2025 00:00:00

Police on Sunday used force to disperse the protesting primary-schoolteacher candidates as they tried to take position in front of the Secretariat in the city, causing traffic chaos.

The job seekers continued their protest demanding immediate appointment for the 11th day.

Before going to join a march towards the Secretariat, they held a rally in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh.

As the protesters moved towards the Secretariat, at one stage, they faced a police barricade in front of the Shikkha Bhaban.

Later, the recommended teachers in the government job took position there and chanted various slogans demanding quick appointment.

Police tried to stop them there while they were coming towards the Secretariat via the National Press Club and in front of the Supreme Court.

However, the protesters defied the obstacle and moved towards the Secretariat.

When they tried to enter the Secretariat, they faced a police barricade.

At one stage, police used water cannons to bring the situation under control. Later the recommended teachers started agitation in front of the Shikkha Bhaban taking a firmer stand.

The protesters said that no one has talked to them or given any assurance about meeting their demands in the last 11 days.

They also threatened that they would remain on the streets until they receive an assurance from the government.

The High Court earlier cancelled the recruitment of 6,531 candidates selected under quota from Dhaka and Chattogram divisions and ordered a fresh merit-based selection.

Primary and Mass Education Affairs Adviser Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder earlier said they appealed against the High Court verdict for reconsideration.

The verdict followed a writ petition, which led the court to issue a rule on November 19, 2023, and suspend the recruitment process for six months, halting the appointment of the candidates.
