Political parties continue to support interim govt: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | December 13, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that political parties have been lending their supports to the interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus.

"We believe that they will pay their attention to the general election after completing essential reforms," he told the media after his arrival along with his wife at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from London.

The BNP secretary general said that during his stay in London he had a meeting with the acting chairman and talked to expatriate BNP leaders, Bangladeshi people and also to the UK media. "My trip to London was fruitful."

He said that acting Chairman of the party Tarique Rahman will return to the country after disposal of all false cases filed against him.

"You know that a number of false and vindictive cases have been filed against him. He will be back to the country once the cases are dismissed or withdrawn."

When asked about his discussion with Tarique Rahman, he said that Tarique Rahman has requested the country's people to be patient.

Tarique Rahman also called upon everyone to remain united, uphold the spirit of the mass uprising and also help restore democracy in the country, said the BNP leader.

Mirza Fakhrul and his wife Rahat Ara Begum left for London on November 30. BNP leaders Farhad Hossain Azad, Abu Mohammad Ahsan Firoz and media cell member Sairul Kabir Khan were present at the airport, among others.

Meanwhile at another event, BNP chairperson's adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque, who was present as the chief guest, called upon the neighbouring India not to get involved in the internal affairs of Bangladesh.

"We are an independent and sovereign country. We want to live and hold our election independently. We don't want anyone's interference in our internal affairs," he said at the programme, marking the 12th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Nabin Dal at the National Press Club in the capital on Thursday.

He alleged that India wanted to turn Bangladesh into its eighth sister by leaning on Sheikh Hasina. He called upon West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to meddle in the affairs of Bangladesh.

About India's alleged threat against Bangladesh, he said that people of Brahmanbaria are enough to resist aggression from Agartala, Tripura, India.

President of Jatiyatabadi Nabin Dal Humayun Ahmed Talukder presided over the event, which was also attended by Swechchhasebak affairs Secretary Mir Sorafat Ali Sopu.
