Poverty and inequality remain two major challenges for Bangladesh to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Around 39 million people of the country still live in poverty and nearly 21 million live in extreme poverty ($ 1.90 a day) despite progress in reducing poverty head count rates.
Some of the factors that correlate with poverty are limited access to financial resources, human resources and natural and health shocks.
These were observed on Monday at a workshop titled 'Strengthening Skills System for Achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Decent Work'. National Skills Development Council (NSDC) Secretariat and International Labour Organization (ILO) jointly organized the workshop at a city hotel.
Monirul Islam, deputy chief of General Economics Division (GED) under the Planning Commission, presented a paper on 'Progress, Challenges and Way Forward Towards SDGs Implementation in Bangladesh' at the workshop.
ABM Khorshed Alam, chief executive officer of NSDC, chaired the programme.
