Protests have erupted against the backdrop of a series of recent incidents of rape, street violence and other criminal offenses across the country.

The demonstrators have demanded resignation of Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury for his failure to curb the growing incidents of crimes, reports UNB.

In the capital on Monday, police obstructed protesters marching towards the home ministry, demanding the resignation of the home adviser. Witnesses said the protesters under the banner of "Dhorshon O Nipironer Biruddhe Bangladesh" started marching towards the ministry around 2:30 pm. Police set up barricades, leading to a scuffle between the two sides.

They also called for effective measures to curb the incidents of rape and street violence across the country, immediate trial for all such cases, and rational reforms in relevant laws.

In Savar, students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) put up barricade on Dhaka-Aricha highway demanding resignation of the home adviser. They took out a procession from Shaheed Minar on the campus and took to the street, halting traffic movement.

Arifuzzaman Ujjal, a student of the 47th batch of the university, said "We can see that the law and order situation has completely collapsed across the country. Those who actively participated in the July revolution have come under attack. False cases are being filed. There is no security in our lives. Incidents of murder, mugging and rape are going on across the country."

On the other hand, in a late-night demonstration, a group of Dhaka University (DU) students staged a protest on the campus in the early hours of Monday, demanding immediate resignation of the home adviser.

During the protest beginning at 1:30 am, students issued an ultimatum to the home adviser, demanding his resignation by 1 pm on Tuesday.

The students, hailing from various halls, first assembled at Hallpara and later marched towards the Raju Sculpture, chanting various slogans.

They expressed frustration over the rising incidents of killings, robberies, and rapes throughout the country, accusing the home adviser of failing to ensure public safety.
