Quota reformists stage rally, demand gazette

September 13, 2018 00:00:00

Quota reformists brought out a rally on the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday demanding immediate publication of a gazette notification on quota system, reports UNB.

Nurul Haq Nur, a joint convener of Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council, said, "Five months have elapsed since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the abolition of quota system in parliament".

"But still we don't see any sign of publication of the gazette notification", he said.

He further said, "We never wanted the abolition of quota system in government jobs, we demanded a reform in the light of our five-point demand."

Nur urged the government to publish the gazette notification as soon as possible, withdraw false cases against the students and ensure exemplary punishment to attackers.

They brought out the rally from the DU Central Library that ended at Raju Memorial Sculpture after parading different points of the campus.

In April, students of public and private universities across the country waged a strong movement demanding reforms in the quota system in public service recruitment process.

In the face of the movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced in parliament on April 11 the abolition of all types of quotas in government jobs. But no gazette notification has so far been issued regarding the abolishment of the quota system as per the Pr4ime Minister's declaration.
