The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast that moderate to very heavy rain is likely to occur in parts of Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.

"There is a possibility of moderate to heavy, and sometimes very heavy, rain in all districts of Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions at any time," said meteorologist AKM Nazmol Haque on Sunday.

He said that similar rain is also likely in Cumilla, Noakhali and Chattogram districts of Chattogram division, and Narsingdi and Narayanganj districts in the eastern part of Dhaka division.

Barishal division may see relatively less rain. There is also a possibility of light to moderate rain in Khulna division.

The BMD's forecast for 120 hours from 9am on Sunday said a low-pressure area extended from West Bengal to the north Bay of Bengal.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning, may occur in many places of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and in some places of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.

Moderate to heavy, or even very heavy, rain may also occur in some places of Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, the Met Office said.

Daytime temperatures may remain largely unchanged across the country during this period, while night temperatures may rise slightly.

The BMD in its special warning for river ports said westerly or northwesterly winds of 45-60kph may sweep over Dhaka, Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar regions until 6pm on Sunday.

It said that the winds may be accompanied by rain or thunderstorms with temporary gusts or squalls.

River ports in these areas have been asked to hoist cautionary signal No. 1.
