CHATTOGRAM, July 14: The sufferings of the people of greater Chattogram knew no bound as rain continued to pour since July 03, causing water-logging in most parts of the city.

People in rural areas were bracing for flooding as water level of rivers was rising day by day amid high tide.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Delwar Hossain said the district administration had already formed 284 medical teams to provide treatment to flood-affected people in Chattogram.

The administration had also opened eight flood shelters in city areas while around 100 others in almost all upazilas of Chattogram, he added.

"We have distributed 336 tonnes of rice, 4,905 packets of dry food and Tk 11 lakh in cash among flood victims in rural areas. Besides, 600 packets of dry food were sent to Satkania upazila today," he said.

Inclement weather was hindering loading and unloading of goods at Chattogram seaport, the prime seaport of the country.

Besides, transportation of goods from Chattogram port and jetties was being hampered due to water-logging as roads went under 3-4 feet water.

Businessmen said they incurred huge losses as carrying of essentials from commercial hubs-- Khatunganj, Chaktai, Korbaniganj, and Asadganj-- was being disrupted due to water-logging.

Rain continued to pour for 12 consecutive days in Chattogram and adjoining districts including Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari, disrupting the life of people here. Low-lying areas of the port city including Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali and Chaktai went under knee-deep water.

Local meteorological department said 80.3mm rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours from 12pm on Saturday. The department also hoisted signal number 3 for Chattogram port and Cox's Bazar due to rough weather.

Commuters suffered a lot as main city roads were inundated due to heavy downpour. Office-goers and thousands of garment workers were the worst sufferers.

Rural areas of Chattogram were also affected by flood water. More than 200 villages at Raojan, Rangunia, Fatikchari, Satkania, Lohagara and Patiya upazilas were flooded by rainwater.

Meanwhile, road communication of Chattogram with Bandarban and Cox's Bazar was disrupted on Sunday due to rain and tidal water.

Most areas in Rajakhali, Kutubdia, Pekua, Mongnama, Bodor Khali, Rajghat, Matarbari, Dholghat, Bondorpara, Sadna Dail, Chorpara, Shahporir Dwip and Jalia para were inundated due to heavy rain.
