Rising supply pulls veg prices down

FE REPORT | November 03, 2024 00:00:00

Prices of vegetables showed a notable decline in a week thanks to rising supply of early winter crops, said traders.

On Saturday morning, vegetables such as okra, pointed gourd, ridge gourd, and snake gourd were priced at Tk 50-60 per kilogramme (kg), reflecting a reduction of approximately Tk 20-30 a kg compared to the last week.

Winter cauliflower and cabbage have seen noticeable price drops, falling to Tk 30-40 from Tk 60. Meanwhile, the price of bottle gourd has fallen to Tk 40-60 a piece from Tk 80-120.

Brinjal, bitter gourd, and teasel gourd have been selling between Tk 80-100 per kg, while green papaya is available at Tk 40 a kg, all significantly affordable compared to the recent highs exceeding Tk 100 a kg.

Green chilies, which had reached a high of over Tk 250 per kg two weeks ago, are currently selling at Tk 120-180 a kg.

The influx of early winter crops will likely continue to reduce prices in the coming days, according to vegetable vendor Arshgad Ali at the Karwan Bazar market.

However, the price of potatoes saw a slight increase, currently being sold at Tk 60-65 a kg, rising Tk 5.

Onion prices remain at previous highs, with imported onions at Tk 120-130 per kg and local varieties at Tk 150.

The egg costs, which were volatile weeks ago, reached a stable range of Tk 150-155 a dozen.

The local fish market is mostly static as cultured Rui has been retailing at Tk 350-450 a kg, Pabda at Tk 400-600, pangas at Tk 200-220, and koi at Tk 220-240.
