RMG workers’ demo for pay under latest wage structure

FE Report | January 17, 2019 00:00:00

Workers of an apparel maker blocked on Wednesday Shyamoli Ring Road in the city, demanding that their company give wages as per the latest pay structure.

They took to the streets in the morning as their company, Dynamic Fashion Ltd, gave them wages as per the previous pay scale instead of the latest one.

Getting assurances from the factory owner, the agitators returned to their workplace at 12:30pm, almost four hours after the demonstration, witnesses said.

Dynamic Fashion disbursed extra wages to workers as per the revised pay scale at around 3:00pm, according to a company official.

However, the blockade on the road, which connects Mohammadpur, Adabor and Shyamoli, created nagging congestion during school and office hours.

One of the demonstrators said the company gave wages on Tuesday as per the previous pay scale.

Meanwhile, no untoward incident was reported on the day at major garment hubs like Ashulia, Savar, Tongi, Gazipur and Mirpur areas.

Members of security forces in large numbers were on alert in the agitation-prone areas to tackle any unwarranted situation.

The garment workers demonstrated for over a week in these areas, demanding elimination of disparity in the wage board award by the government last year.

Following unrest, the government revised the minimum pay structure for workers with a hike by Tk 15 to Tk 786 in different grades.

During their eight-day demonstration, several hundred people, including workers, commuters and members of law-enforcement agencies, got injured in multiple incidents of clashes.

On the third day of the demo on January 08, workers clashed with lawmen near Hemayetpur that left Suman Mia, 22, a worker of Anlima Textiles, dead.
