Road conditions in Chattogram worsen amid monsoon rains

CHATTOGRAM, July 11: Heavy rainfall in the current monsoon season left most of Chattogram's roads in severely dilapidated condition, causing immense sufferings to people.

Cracks, potholes, ditches and water-logging left the city unfit for traffic with the continuation of rainfall from May 28 to June 5, June 15 to June 20 and then again till Friday after starting on July 5, which caused the most damage.

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has taken immediate steps for renovation of the roads.

Mayor of CCC Dr Shahadat Hossain said, "We have already taken steps to make the drains and canals clear during the current monsoon to save the people from water logging and save the roads from damage," he said.

Sources said, the roads which are in the worst condition are located in the city's: Agrabad, Barik Building, Chattogram Port area, Patenga, Steel Mills, Katgor Bazar, Airport, Muradpur, Oxygen Intersection, Sholoshohor, Dewanhat, Olanker Intersection, Port Connecting Road, Bohoddarhat, College Road, Jamal Khan, Momin Road, Station Road, Kadamtali, Dhonialapara, Chawk Bazar, Sholok Bahar, Katalganj, Bakalia, New Market, SS Khaled Road, Mehdibag, or, Nizam Road, Pahartali and Bayezid Bostami.

The condition of the prime road to Kalurghat Industrial Area where many industries, including multinational industries like Unilever Bangladesh Limited, operate turned very poor and it has become extremely difficult for vehicles to ply on it.

City dwellers said that the port city of Chattogram has now turned into a place of frequent water-logging even during moderate rainfalls due to a faulty drainage system.

Almost all the low-lying areas of the city become waterlogged during torrential rainfall.

The rainwater is inundating the city streets by overflowing the drains as most of the drains had silted up heavily, disrupting the normal passing of rainwater.

Most of the vehicles currently plying on the roads are under the threat of a high risk of accidents.

Sources said transport owners in the port city had to pay additional money for repairing their vehicles in the current condition. Lack of maintenance work left the bricks and pitches of most of the roads damaged, they added.
