COX'S BAZAR, Feb 7: Influx of the Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar to Bangladesh still continued despite a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the two countries.
According to Bangladesh-Myanmar bordering sources, at least 600 more Rohingya people entered Bangladesh through different points of Ukhia and Teknaf on Tuesday and Wednesday last.
With this, over the last seven days at least 1200 Rohingya refugees crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar through the Noakhalia Para, Sabrang and Sahporir Dip of Teknaf upazila and Anjuman Para of Ukhia border points crossing the Naf river. The number of Rohingya arrivals now stand at 689,000, sources in the border area said.
Suddenly at a time about 500 Rohingyas arrived in Teknaf through Noakhalia Para beach on Tuesday morning with male, female and children. Of them 8 years old baby Deen Islam died of cold related disease. Later govt officials took them to Nayapara refugee camp. Officials working in refugee camps said that 200 more Rohingyas entered Teknaf on Wednesday.
An MOU was signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar governments on November 23 last to start the repatriation process of Rohingya refugees. Despite this MOU, influx of the Rohingyas to Bangladesh still continued.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Teknaf Jahid Hossain Siddiqi said that the flow of Rohingya influx slowed but did not stop. After signing of MOU more than 10,000 new Rohingyas entered Bangladesh so far, sources said.
Newly-arrived Rohingyas said at present there is no environment in the villages of Rakhine state of Myanmar as the military force and Buddhist terrorists jointly continued persecution of Rohingyas.
Traumatised, the refugees had camped out in the open in an area of no-man's land between the two countries. They crossed at low tide where they were met by Bangladeshi border guards.
