The Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) election, originally scheduled for September 25, has been deferred by 20 days due to what authorities described as an "unfavourable situation" on the campus. The election is now set for October 16.

In an official notification on Monday, Chief Election Commissioner Prof F Nazrul Islam confirmed the decision, citing conditions that made it impossible to conduct the election as planned.

The notification stated that the 2025 RUCSU election commission, in a full meeting, reviewed the situation surrounding the upcoming elections for the central students' union, hall unions, and the Senate.

"The commission observed that the current environment at Rajshahi University is not conducive to holding the RUCSU election," it read.

The election commission pointed to the ongoing "complete shutdown" enforced by teachers, officers, and staff, which has disrupted logistical preparations. It also noted that the required participation of teachers, officers, and staff in election duties could not be ensured.

"In view of the above, and to ensure a festive, participatory, and fair election, the election commission has unanimously decided to reschedule the polls to October 16, 2025," the notification added.

Chief Returning Officer Prof Dr Setaur Rahman echoed the commission's stance, saying, "We have taken this decision after considering all aspects. We hope the election will be held smoothly on the newly fixed date."
