Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasised the need to make SAARC more impactful by focusing on functional areas such as climate change, sustainable development, and renewable energy, which are of common interest to all member states.

He made this observation when the Secretary General of SAARC, Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar, called on him in the city.

Highlighting the importance of SAARC as a platform for regional cooperation in South Asia, the Chief Adviser emphasised that SAARC should prioritise activities that connect people and enhance a sense of fraternity, understanding, and a SAARC identity through programmes such as exchanges of youths, journalists, entrepreneurs, and writers, among others.

During the meeting, the secretary general briefed the Chief Adviser on the current activities of SAARC, its regional centers, and specialised bodies, as well as the activities planned for the upcoming year.

He expressed sincere thanks to the Chief Adviser for keeping SAARC a priority and continuously advocating for its importance in the well-being of people in the region.

The secretary general also expressed appreciation for the role played by Bangladesh in the foundation of the organisation in 1985.

He further stated that the celebration of the historic 40th anniversary of the foundation is an important occasion that would provide the right context to revitalize the organization.

Golam Sarwar stressed the need for sincere efforts from member states in reinvigorating the SAARC process.

He also met with the Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the city.
