Samrat, Arman on remand

FE Report | October 16, 2019 00:00:00

A Dhaka Court on Tuesday sent former president of Jubo League Dhaka South unit Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat on a 10-day remand in two cases filed under Firearms Act and Narcotics Control Act.

Besides, the same court granted five-day remand for Samrat's close aide Enamul Haque Arman, former vice president of the unit, in a case filed under Narcotics Control Act.

Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer of the cases.

Earlier on Tuesday, police produced the two expelled Jubo League leaders in the court and prayed for 10-day remand for each in the cases filed under Narcotics Control Act, and another 10-day remand for Samrat in the case filed under Firearms Act.

Gazi Zillur Rahman, Abdul Kader and some other lawyers appeared in the court on behalf of the two former Jubo League leaders while Abdullah Abu, Sajjadul Hoque Shihab and Azad Rahman stood for the state.

Meanwhile, the chief metropolitan magistrate's court in Old Dhaka and its surrounding area were plastered all over with posters demanding Samrat's release.

Activists of Jubo League and Samrat's supporters also gathered around the court premises and were chanting slogans claiming their leader's innocence.

On October 06, Rapid Action Battalion members arrested Samrat and Arman at Cumilla. A RAB mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam, sentenced Samrat to six months' imprisonment for possessing wild animal hides and another six months for possessing illegal liquor.

RAB filed the two cases against him with Ramna Police Station under the arms and narcotics control acts the next day. He came under the spotlight after RAB busted his illegal casino business at different sporting clubs in Dhaka. He was expelled from Jubo League immediately after he was arrested.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in the capital for treatment after two days of his arrest. Later, on October 12, he was taken back to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
