Seven more structures bulldozed in city

FE Report | March 13, 2019 00:00:00

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) pulled down on Tuesday several illegal structures built on the bank of the Turag River in the city's Mohammadpur.

A total of seven structures including four multi-storey buildings were demolished on the day as the government agency resumed its eviction drive in the second phase.

A BIWTA official said they restarted the drive around 9.00 am in Dhaka Udyan housing project area.

"We are now conducting drive to remove housing plots, which are illegally being developed on the land encroaching into the riverbanks," he said.

The agency has already demolished the structures in illegally-developed housing plots in Kamrangirchar and Keraniganj areas, he added.

"Every illegal building on the banks of Buriganga, Turag and other rivers around the capital city will be knocked down in phases," he said.

The BIWTA will establish permanent walkway on the banks of Buriganga and Turag rivers to ensure their natural flow.

The authority has already finalised the plan for walkway on the Buriganga stretching from Sadarghat to Gabtoli.

The eviction drive will continue for the last three working days of each week until the end of this month.

The BIWTA has so far demolished over 1,800 illegal structures and reclaimed at least 42 acres of land on the banks of Buriganga and Turag rivers.
