Dengue continues to take a heavy toll on public health, as more and more people are dying from the deadly tropical disease. With the latest fatalities, the Aedes mosquito-borne disease has claimed 269 lives this year and the tally of hospital admissions rose to 66,423.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin on Monday, of the latest deaths, four occurred in Dhaka North, one in Dhaka South, and another in a hospital in Barishal.
In October alone, 71 people died of dengue, following the highest monthly toll of 76 fatalities recorded in September.
Earlier, 39 deaths were recorded in August, 41 in July, 19 in June, three each in February and May, seven in April and 10 in January. No deaths were reported in March.
Hospital admissions were recorded as follows: 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June and 10,496 in August.
In September, 15,866 patients were hospitalised and from Oct 1 to 26, the figure reached 19,081.
The health directorate has been keeping records of dengue-related hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.
Among those years, 2023 saw the highest number of hospitalisations with 321,179 patients and the highest number of deaths, totalling 1,705.
