Standard Chartered Bangladesh has unveiled a guidebook to help Japanese businesses invest and operate in Bangladesh.

The book titled "Doing business in Bangladesh" offers detailed information and guidelines in both Japanese and English, was launched at an event on Thursday night in Dhaka.

Speaking on the occasion, CEO of Standard Chartered Bangladesh Naser Ezaz Bijoy said Japan and Bangladesh enjoy a special relationship, which has stood the test of time.

"The relationships between the governments and the private sectors of two friendly nations have reached a new height in recent years," he said.

He said Japanese investors have never been more interested to invest in Bangladesh.

It is a win-win proposition as slowing growth in the developed markets and potential impact of US-China trade tensions make "a compelling case" to invest in Bangladesh, a country that offers a decade-long strong and consistent growth story, he said.

He said, however, some key administrative and regulatory simplification needs to be done with the urgency for Bangladesh to realise its potential.

"We are very optimistic about the prospects and are eager to serve our clients on both ends."

The event brought together the leaders of Japanese business and diplomatic communities in Bangladesh, along with policymakers and leading corporate houses of Bangladesh.

Among others, present on the occasion, were Chief Coordinator for SDG Affairs of Bangladesh Abul Kalam Azad, Deputy Chief of Mission (Minister) in Dhaka Hiroyuki Yamaya, Executive Chairman, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Sirazul Islam, CEO, Public Private Partnership Office Bangladesh Muhammad Alkama Siddiqui, Country Representative of Jetro Bangladesh Yuji Ando and CEO of Standard Chartered Japan Yasunori Takeuchi.

Standard Chartered Bangladesh has set up a dedicated Japan-Bangladesh Desk as the bank is playing a leading role in enabling and facilitating trade and investment across the Bangladesh-Japan corridor.

The desk delivers a seamless experience for Japanese businesses in Bangladesh.

In 2018, the bank facilitated a landmark transaction between a Japanese and Bangladeshi company, which represents the single largest foreign private investment into Bangladesh and the single largest consumer sector acquisition in Bangladesh to date.

The bank is also the mandated account bank for major Japan-funded megaprojects such as such as the Matabari Coal Power Plant, Kachpur Meghna Gumti 2nd Bridge Project and MRT Line 6.
