The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday approved Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman's application to include him in the voter list ahead of the general election to be held in February 2026.

EC Secretariat Director (Public Relations) and Information Officer Md Ruhul Amin Mollik confirmed the development to journalists at the commission headquarters in the capital's Agargaon.

On Saturday, two days after arriving in Bangladesh following 17 years of exile in the UK, Tarique completed all formalities for voter registration and the preparation of his national identity card (NID) by visiting the EC headquarters.

He will contest the elections from the Dhaka-17 constituency.

BNP Chairperson's Personal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar collected Tarique's nomination paper from the office of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharf Uddin Ahmed Choudhury at 11:10 am on Sunday.

Tarique will contest the Bogura-6 seat as well, with BNP leaders collecting his nomination paper for the constituency on December 21.

He visited the Gulshan office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for the first time on Sunday, with his vehicle arriving there at around 1:40pm, BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan told reporters.

The office was opened for Khaleda following the political changeover in 2008, when Tarique left the country.

BNP standing committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan, Selima Rahman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury were present in the office during Tarique's visit.

Both the Nayapaltan central office and the Gulshan chairperson's office have been freshly painted, cleaned and decorated ahead of his return.

In preparation for the upcoming election, BNP has rented a four-storey building on Road No 90 in Gulshan as an election office. The building has strict security arrangements, a briefing room on the second floor, seating for various departments and a research cell.

This office will serve as a coordination centre for all election-related activities.
