The northern district of Naogaon has recorded the lowest temperature across the country on Saturday. Heavy fog in the district has also forced vehicles on the road to use their headlights even in the day, reports bdnews24.com.
"Alongside the fog, the temperature has started to drop due to the cold wind blowing in from the north," said Mizanur Rahman, senior observer at the Badalgachi Meteorological Department.
"On Saturday morning, Naogaon recorded the lowest temperature in the country at 9.9 degrees Celsius. It was 12 degrees Celsius yesterday."
The temperature may drop even further, Mizanur said.
The winter chill has descended on Naogaon for the past few days. Public thoroughfares have been shrouded in heavy fog from dawn to 8am and in the evening as well. The low visibility has led many vehicles to turn on their headlights, even in the day.
Day labourers, and rickshaw and rickshaw van drivers, who do heavily physical work to earn their livelihoods, suffer the most from the intense cold.
Potato and mustard cultivation, as well as the harvesting and threshing of Amon seedlings is ongoing amid the winter cold.
Hospitals are seeing a rise in cold-related illnesses. Most of the newly-admitted patients are children and the elderly.
