Tenders floated for 3 more spot LNG cargoes

FE REPORT | June 03, 2026 00:00:00

Bangladesh will buy three more liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from the spot market by early July amid the persistent Middle East crisis and Strait of Hormuz disruptions.

State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has floated tenders to purchase the cargoes for delivery over the June 26-27, June 30-July 1, and July 6-7 windows.

The volume of the cargoes is approximately 3.36 million MMBtu each, according to officials.

The cargoes would be delivered to the Moheshkhali Island, with an option to discharge to either of the country's two floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs) located there, said a senior RPGCL official.

RPGCL is part of state-owned Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation, also known as Petrobangla, and is responsible for LNG trade in Bangladesh.

If these tenders become successful, the South Asian country's total LNG cargo buys from the spot market this year will reach 28, with 26 of them bought after the start of the Middle East war.

Bangladesh's total purchase of LNG cargoes from the spot market would jump to eight in June with these tender successes, the RPGCL official said.

It bought the highest seven spot LNG cargoes in a month, in two consecutive months of summer which included May and April, to avoid any crisis in domestic demand, he added.

Bangladesh had been buying more spot LNG cargoes since the start of the war as most of its long-term LNG suppliers from Qatar and Oman had stopped deliveries, announcing force majeure, he also said.

Bangladesh had imported a total of 49 LNG cargoes from the spot market in 2025, said the official.

Bangladesh last awarded three spot LNG cargoes for delivery in late June over the June 15-16 and June 21-22 windows to Posco International Corporation and over the June 24-25 windows to TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd at $18.09 per MMBTu, $18.60 per MMBTu, and $18.49 per MMBTu, respectively.

Since Bangladesh's LNG imports began in 2018, the country imported approximately 37.014 million tonnes through 597 cargoes as of April 2026, according to RPGCL data.

Bangladesh's overall natural gas supplies were around 2.08 billion cubic feet per day, including 452 million cubic feet per day of re-gasified LNG, according to official Petrobangla data as of June 1.
