Three more childred die with measles-like symptoms

Dengue claims two more lives

FE REPORT | June 25, 2026 00:00:00

Three children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Wednesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest fatalities, deaths linked to measles-like symptoms have risen to 689 since mid-March this year. Of the total fatalities, 93 were laboratory-confirmed measles cases, according to a DGHS bulletin.

Some 996 new suspected measles infections and 93 confirmed cases were recorded during the reporting period.

The cumulative number of suspected measles infections has climbed to 95,760, while confirmed cases have reached 11,390 since mid-March, the DGHS said.

In response to the outbreak, which has spread rapidly across the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched an emergency measles-rubella vaccination campaign on 5 April, targeting children aged between six months and five years.

The government said more than 18.47 million children have been vaccinated since the campaign began and that immunisation efforts will continue.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that affects people of all ages and remains one of the leading causes of death among young children worldwide.

Although measles is generally a mild to moderately severe illness, it can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, diarrhoea, secondary ear infections, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), blindness and death.

Meanwhile, the DGHS reported two dengue-related deaths during the same 24-hour period, taking the total number of dengue fatalities this year to 12.

The number of confirmed dengue cases has reached 5,317 so far this year.

Of the total, 157 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the reporting period.
