At least three people sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a flat in the city's Mohakhali area on Sunday morning.
Two of the victims were identified as Sagar, 26, and Himel, 21, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost in-charge Bacchu Mia.
Citing rescuers, he said Sagar and Himel, both working at private companies, have been living in the flat on the second floor of a building at Amtoli area in Mohakhali.
"Like other days, the housemaid came to the flat around 8:00 am and Sagar opened the door. After that he tried to light a cigarette and all the rooms of the flat caught fire within seconds," he added.
The policeman also said it was suspected that the fire might have broken out due to a leak on the gas pipeline of the flat.
Sagar sustained 65 per cent burn injury and Himel 15 per cent. The housemaid was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, he added.
