TIB demands steps to restore public trust in financial sector

FE Report | March 17, 2018 00:00:00

Bangladesh chapter of the global anti-sleaze body has called for efficient, independent and impartial role of the Anti-corruption Commission to ensure good governance in the country.

The Transparency International Bangladesh made a nine-point demand including exemplary punishment for the people involved in question paper leak, and greater participation of the people in preventing corruption at the grass-roots and national levels.

The demands came at a meeting of the TIB members in Dhaka on Thursday, the anti-graft body said in a statement.

TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman moderated the function, while chairperson of its board of trustees (BoT) Sultana Kamal, and member M Hafizuddin Khan, attended the meeting, among others. A total of 46 members took part in the annual meeting.

Expressing resentment over the government's failure to check question paper-leak in public examinations, the TIB demanded exemplary punishment for the people involved in such an act.

They urged the government to take tough actions against question paper leak, illegal trade in the name of admission to educational institutions and job-recruitment.

They also feared that failure to ensure transparency in the education sector would endanger the dream to build a nation based on merit.

The members also called for cancellation of Section 57 of ICT law, Section 32 of proposed Digital Security Act and Section 14 of Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Act to ensure transparency in establishing the people's right to information.

Speaking at the meeting, Sultana Kamal said preventing corruption was a "challenging" task, as one would face confrontation from various quarters.

Every person in the society should hold a strong position against corruption, she noted.

Other demands include no opportunities for legalising the black-money and initiative to restore public confidence in the financial sector.

The TIB has been inducting citizens including various professionals as its members to strengthen the social movement against corruption.

Presently, the body has 210 members.
