FE REPORT | June 18, 2021 00:00:00

The activities of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) must be focused in a way so that all transport agencies and stakeholders follow the city's transport plan known as strategic transport plan to ensure mobility of people.

Emphasis has also been given to work on the projects with less investment but easy to implement like cycle lane, pedestrian facility and training of drivers to make the city liveable.

The views came during a virtual public hearing organized by DTCA on Thursday with its Executive Director Khandaker Rakibur Rahman in the chair.

The officials of road transport and bridges ministry, its agencies including Bangladesh Bridge Authority, Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation, Bangladesh Railway, academicians, engineers and transport users from home and abroad also participated in the hearing.

The speakers pointed out the issues of mass transport and public sufferings due to ongoing construction of mass rapid transit lines and bus rapid transit lines,

Dhaka elevated expressway. They demanded that the authority should not give approval to the projects which are not included in the STP.

As the STP which had already been revised in 2015 will be reviewed again, they urged the authority to take the issues of violation of the STP seriously.

Prof Shafiqur Rahman questioned the role of DTCA in subway network which is planned despite not having the provision of subway in the revised STP.

He also urged the authority to engage more transport experts to develop expertise at national level for reducing dependency on foreign consultants.
