Illegal amassment of Tk 250m wealth

Two cases filed against ex-PM's peon, his wife

FE REPORT | December 18, 2024 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two cases against Md. Jahangir Alam, the former office assistant (peon) to ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and his wife Kamrun Nahar, on charges of amassing wealth worth over Tk 250 million illegally.

Inquiry revealed staggering financial transactions amounting to Tk 6.26 billion in Jahangir's bank accounts.

ACC's Deputy Director Rashedul Islam filed one case against Jahangir, while Assistant Director Piyas Pal lodged another case against his wife Kamrun Nahar.

ACC's Director General Akhtar Hossain confirmed it at a press briefing at the ACC headquarters in the city on Tuesday.

According to the case documents, Jahangir Alam amassed immovable and movable assets worth over Tk 182 million, which are beyond his known sources of income. ACC inquiries discovered that Jahangir, through illegal means, deposited Tk 6.26 billion across 23 accounts in eight banks. The deposited funds were later withdrawn or transferred through various channels, raising serious suspicions of financial irregularities.

The ACC inquiry further found that Jahangir opened multiple bank accounts under his name and in the name of various business entities. A total of Tk 6.26 billion was deposited into these accounts, of which more than Tk 6.24 billion was withdrawn. The funds' movement was described by the ACC as "abnormal and suspicious".

Jahangir Alam's company, Sky Re-Arrange Limited, held a current account in Mutual Trust Bank. Between the first 83 days of 2024 alone (in first five months), the account recorded deposits and transfers totaling Tk 1.78 billion.

In the second case, Kamrun Nahar was accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 68 million. She has been charged under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004, along with Section 109 of the Penal Code for abetting and retaining illegal wealth.

The controversy surrounding Jahangir Alam began when  former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mentioned him during a press conference at Gonobhaban on July 14. Addressing a question regarding wealth accumulation, Sheikh Hasina said, "Even my house peon reportedly owns Tk 4.0 billion and doesn't travel without helicopter."

The revelations sparked public curiosity and scrutiny while reports indicate that Jahangir owns multiple flats and houses in Dhaka's Mirpur area.
