Amid the growing call for appropriate treatment of those injured during the July-August anti-discrimination student movement, preparations were completed to conduct cornea transplant surgery in the eyes of two victims on Sunday.
The duo was first among the movement victims to have the corneal transplant operations.
The transplant operations were scheduled to be conducted at the National Institute of Opthalmology & Hospital (NIOH).
For surgery, cornea tissues were brought from Nepal to Bangladesh on an emergency flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
In order to restore vision among the eye-injured victims of the anti-discrimination student movement, arrangements have been made for supply of ultra-sensitive corneal tissue from Seba Foundation, USA.
Earlier, the US Seba Foundation pledged to provide 40 corneas following call from the government to extend advanced treatment for the eye injured, according to the health ministry.
As a result, for the first time, the corneas of two people injured in the movement are going to be transplanted.
As this operation has to be done within four hours, the corneas have been brought to the country on an urgent basis by a Bangladesh plane.
The government health affairs adviser earlier said that over 400 people lost their visions completely and partially after being severely injured during the movement.
At least 775 people were killed and over 22,000 injured in the July-August movement, according to health ministry data.
