Two people were killed and another injured in a mob beating in the Sylhetia Bazar area of Kamrangirchar on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Nadim, son of Sultan Mia from Shahidnagar in Lalbagh, and Masud, son of Sona Mia from Acharwala Ghat area in Kamrangirchar, reports UNB.

The injured, identified as 30-year-old Sohag, is currently in police custody after receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Sub-inspector Amanullah Aman of Kamrangirchar Police Station said Masud died on the spot after being beaten by a mob.

Nadim, who sustained critical injuries, was taken to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead around 11:30pm.

Inspector (Investigation) Sheikh Lutfor Rahman of Kamrangirchar Police Station said a local businessman had previously filed a case  against several individuals over extortion in the area.

On Wednesday night, in an apparent attempt to pressurise the businessman into withdrawing the case, a group of four to five men went to Sylhetia Bazar and allegedly issued threats.

A quarrel broke out, drawing the attention of locals who caught three of the men and beat them up.

Masud died on the spot, while Nadim and Sohag were taken to hospital.

The others managed to flee. The bodies have been kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy.

The incident is under investigation, said the OC.
