UK medical team visits injured at NITOR

A UK medical team started working on Tuesday for treatments of the people injured in the student-led mass uprising in July and August.

The two-member team consists of Georgian orthopaedic surgeon Saba Papuashbili and Jordanian rehabilitation specialist Dima Abdullah Ibrahim Yasin.

They arrived in Dhaka earlier on the day in response to a request for assistance from the interim government, according to the health ministry.

The medical team, carrying vast experience in treating patients in conflict-affected areas worldwide, visited patients at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka and discussed medical issues. They will continue to provide treatment for the patients at NITOR till November 18.

Dr. Kazi Shamim Uzzaman, director of the NITOR, said that the team visited 65 injured patients at the hospital on Tuesday and they were satisfied with the ongoing treatment process. They would give a detailed report on 14 to 15 of these injured today (Wednesday).

Based on the reports, the UK doctors will perform necessary surgeries. At least 775 people were killed and over 22,000 injured in the July-August movement, according to the health ministry data.
