UK's Boris Johnson among leaders on way to Bangladesh

February 03, 2018 00:00:00

More world leaders are flying to Bangladesh to see the plight of Myanmar's Rohingya refugees as the crisis lingers on, reports bdnews24.com.

A senior official at the foreign ministry told the news agency that British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson would make a two-day visit to Bangladesh from Feb 9.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Swiss embassy in Dhaka said President Alain Berset would be visiting the country from Feb 4 to Feb 7 in what would be the first official trip by any Swiss leader.

The foreign ministry earlier on Tuesday announced the visit of a high-powered European Parliament delegation in the second week of this month, following a meeting of the EU ambassador in Dhaka with the foreign minister.

A senior official told the news agency that the delegation can comprise as many as 17 MPs of the European Parliament.

Bangladesh has been under the international spotlight since it began sheltering in Cox's Bazar nearly 700, 000 Rohingyas, who have fled 'ethnic cleansing' in Myanmar since Aug 25 last year.

The two neighbours have also signed deals to start the repatriation process. The international community, however, has warned against any forced repatriation.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo was the latest leader to have visited Cox's Bazar this week.
