UN for unhindered access to Rohingya camps in Myanmar

January 25, 2018 00:00:00

MAUNGDAW, Jan 24 (agencies): The United Nations on Wednesday called on Myanmar to give aid agencies unhindered access to camps it has built for Rohingya refugees before they can return.

An international delegation advising Myanmar toured the Taung Pyo Letwe refugee camp outside the town of Maungdaw near the Bangladesh border. Video of the camp shows long, plywood houses set on a rocky field and surrounded by a wire mesh fence topped with barbed wire.

Another report from Cox's Bazar adds, with a barbed wire fence on one side and a putrid creek on the other, 6,000 Rohingya Muslims in a strip of land between Bangladesh and Myanmar anxiously wait to see if they will be sent back to homes few want to return to.

A tense behind-the-scenes battle is being fought by the two governments over their future and that of more than 750,000 other Rohingya who escaped a military crackdown in Myanmar and now live in camps on the Bangladesh side of the border.
