US envoy dismisses allegation of minority repression in BD

FE Report | July 20, 2019 00:00:00

US ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller said the allegation made by a Bangladeshi citizen regarding minority repression in Bangladesh is incorrect and unfounded.

The envoy made the comments while talking with reporters about the accusation made by one Priya Saha to US President Donald Trump on July 17 in White House.

The US ambassador, after visiting the Buddhist Monastery in the city's Merul Badda area on Friday, said he has visited many places in the country and observed amiable relations among members of various religious communities, a number of private TV channels reported.

The communal harmony in Bangladesh is "praiseworthy", he said.

While meeting the US President in Washington D.C. Ms Saha, who is reportedly an NGO official, alleged that some 37 million minority people have left Bangladesh.

She alleged that minority people living in the country are being tortured by Muslims.

She sought Mr Trump's help so that minority people can stay safe in the country.

Ms Saha's comments drew strong criticism from the government high-ups and common people in Bangladesh.

State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam said the allegations made by Ms Saha will be investigated.

Social media users came down heavily on Ms Saha and said she made the false allegation.

They also said she tarnished the image of the country by giving false statement.
