US, UK want credible election

Both the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) have strongly advocated for holding a free, fair and credible election in Bangladesh.

The envoys of the two countries expressed their views on the upcoming general elections at a 'national campaign' titled 'Shantite Bijoy' (Win With Peace) launched by the Democracy International at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city on Monday.

The event was also attended by representatives of political parties including the ruling Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jatiya Party.

Speaking on the occasion, US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat said, "Individuals from different political parties must be free to express their political views to campaign throughout the country and hold peaceful rallies and meetings without intimidation, reprisal or arbitrary restrictions."

She said free, fair and inclusive elections are important for a democracy especially for one which is on track to become a middle income country.

All parties, groups and individuals should be free to participate fully in the political process leading up to the vote, she added.

Ms Bernicat noted that political parties must accept their rivals as legitimate participants in the political process and as potential leaders of the next government, even when they disagree on issues or policies.

"It is essential that Bangladeshis urge nonviolence by all actors at every stage of the democratic process before, during and after the election. Violence serves only those who wish to undermine the democratic process and interests of Bangladesh and its citizens."

Thanking the participants for joining the event she said, "It is inspiring to see so many of you - prominent leaders - representing different political parties. Your presence demonstrates your commitment to promoting peace, tolerance and democracy in Bangladesh."

"Peace, mutual tolerance and inclusivity - all have a strong tradition in Bangladesh. Together, we can contribute to a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh, through our collaborative work with the government, political parties, civil society, academia, media - and most importantly - the people of Bangladesh" she added.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake said the people of the Bangladesh believe that a peaceful election was crucial for the future prosperity of Bangladesh.

Stressing the need for a peaceful political environment she said violence and disorder should not be part of politics and elections.

She said the UK is committed to support the endeavour of the people of Bangladesh for ensuring proper democratic practices.

Among others, political adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam, BNP standing committee member Dr Moin Khan and Katie Croake, chief of party, Democracy International in Bangladesh attended the programme.
