Verdicts in 3.56pc cases, only 0.37pc punished in 20 yrs

Only 3.56 per cent court verdicts were given in the cases filed against the repressions of women and children over the last 20 years. And the punishment awarded by the courts was only 0.37 per cent during the period.
Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) said this while citing the government data on Saturday in the capital.
In a statement issued on the day, they expressed grave concerns over the recurrence of incidents of rape and violence against women and children in different parts of the country. They said rate of rape incidents has increased like contagious style recently.
The incidents of rape have become an unbridled crime as women of different ages become victim regularly of this kind of barbarous act, they observed.
The statement said the incidents of rape sometimes happend in an 'incredibly barbarous style' that seemed that there was a competition among the rapists.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal termed the two rape incidents in Sylhet and Noakhali 'the gravest example of barbarous act' and assured the nation that those who are responsible for the crime could not go unpunished, it mentioned.
Punishment against the culprit and justice could only be done if there were rules of law in the country, he said adding, a change in social mindsets is needed to stop recurrence of rape and violence and against women and children.
