"If you open the cover page, there is a soothing 'tung-tang' sound that welcomes you with the Eid fragrance. It roamed around the world of my imagination, and I just wanted to buy that card. That 50 tk special Eid card. Colourful, melodias, magical."
Mir Tasfia Mosarrat recalls her childhood memory and opens the door for us to a nostalgia trip to the Eids we left behind but still try to relish through new days.
Whenever we look into the golden days of our childhood Eid memory- some flashes of colours just pop up, with a bunch of innovative handmade Eid cards for our friends and family.
The nostalgia of Eid cards has not perished with time, but it has also taken a beautiful turn and has spread on social media these days. People, both in their personal and professional lives, are going ahead with an Eid card attached to the gifts to make it a bit more special.
The theme of Eid cards most generally includes the recurring theme of Eid for us. Moon and stars, domes of a mosque, calligraphic theme. But people tend to experiment with the theme with their own taste.
Some include birds; some draw children happily roaming around in their Eid costumes. Some make pop-up cards with their favourite anime characters and whatnot. Eid cards are all about what you like to spread- a hint of celebration to the people you love and nothing else.
Pannasree Chowdhury is a banker by profession but arts and crafts is her personal escape from all the busy hectic time of her life. Whenever she gets time, takes it out to mingle with her younger sister who has an online craft store. Pannasree believes that the time she spends with her little sister who is not little anymore while making these cards creates beautiful moments to cherish in life. This Eid, they together made over 40 Eid cards and many more memories than the numbers.
Mir Tasfia Mosarrat, "Eid cards are the memories of my childhood. I still remember hovering around the streetside Eid card sellers. Most of them were at five tk, but the 50 tk card was the one with sounds! In my childhood, Eid for me meant the Eid card itself. My neighbour colony boys would make Eid cards from banner clothes and then sell them to other kids. It really fascinated me. Last Eid, I thought that I would also arrange a card shop this year, but that plan went in vain.
Though she could not hold that shop, Tasfia made some Eid cards for this Eid and believes that there is something beautifully special about creating a card rather than just buying it, "I sometimes make Eid cards and give them as gifts. I think there is an immense touch of love while making an Eid card by yourself. So much affection is attached to each and every card. The recipient of the card received that magic of love and affection when they received the card itself."
Sanjida Akhter Bushra is the owner of an online craft store named Sanju's creation. She believes that the culture of exchanging salami has inspired the idea of Eid cards.
"Since childhood, I really loved playing with paper and scissors, and I think my love for origami also inspired me to make greeting cards for special occasions like my sister's birthday or Eid. I think that followed me to date. Now I also make cards for my customer's occasions. Pouring colours, paper flowers and handmade things make these cards more beautiful."
She feels amazed by the customer appreciation for handmade Eid cards, but this year, she has noticed that many people are selling printed Eid cards, which are cheaper at cost.
Some people choose these cards instead of handmade ones, but those who really appreciate some personal touch are still on the 'handmade Eid card' team regardless of the cost.
Customised cards are her speciality, and she has also received overseas orders for these special cards. People living away from their country often want to provide their friends and families with some unique ideas for festivals, and Eid cards are undoubtedly a special way to do so.
Salami with a sweet token of greeting can make your dear ones happier than ever. So, this Eid, grab a piece of paper and start pouring all the crafts you have in your mind.
Maybe you would listen to the charming melody of your favourite Eid card from a very long time ago like a fairy humming its sweetest song to your ears with an even sweeter memory.
An Eid card is not about perfection- it is about considering the people you care for and counting as your people in life. But keep in mind one thing that Tasfia shared very secretly: "Eid cards are so much fun, but there is no chance that you will get more Salami if you give an Eid card." But who knows, you might get lucky!
