Twelve students from the Department of History of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) were detained after allegedly ragging a group of first-year students of the same department under the pretext of teaching them "manners".

The incident occurred at the university's School and College ground at around 2:00 am on Friday. Following complaints from the victims, the university authorities detained the accused, who later submitted written confessions to the proctorial team admitting their involvement.

The accused students, all from the 2024-25 academic session, were identified as Subhashish Roy, Nasim Uddin Majumder, Abu Abatahi Anik, Naimul Hasan, Abdullah Mahdi, Ishfaq Hadi Sikto, Md Raihan Khan, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil, Saifullah Mansur Anan, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Onto, Shree Kartik Chandra Roy, and Naim Ahmed Sajib.

According to the victims and eyewitnesses, several freshers from the department's 2025-26 academic session received phone calls around at 11:00 pm, asking them to first gather at the Mahua Mancha, and later at the School and College ground. After being made to wait for nearly 40 minutes, they were allegedly taken to a secluded area near the field, where they were subjected to ragging under the guise of "formal introduction".

The victims alleged they were verbally abused, had their parents insulted with obscene language, were forced to stand while holding their ears, and endured both mental and physical harassments.
