Fourteen journalists were given BRAC Migration Media Award 2017 on Wednesday for the media's essential role in promoting and protecting the rights of the migrants and their families, according to a press release.
The journalists received the award in six categories namely, print newspapers (national), print newspapers (local), television, radio, online news sites and photography.
In print newspaper (national) category the first prize went to Abu Jar Ansar Uddin Ahammed of Samakal, the second prize to Adil Sakhawat of Dhaka Tribune and the third prize to Muhammad Wasim Uddin Bhuyan.
In print newspaper (local) category the first prize went to Md Kamrul Islam of Dainik Jalalabad.
For television reporting category Ashish Kumar Sarkar of Somoy Television, Jhumur Bari of Ekattor TV and Mashreq Rahat of Maasranga television stood first, second and third respectively. Saleh Noman of Radio Today won the first prize for radio reporting category. In online news portal category Md Fazlur Rahman of Dhaka Tribune, Md Kawsar Azam of the report24.com and Jasmine Akhter of Bannernews stood first, second and third respectively. The first, second and third prizes in photography category, which has been included for the first time this year, went to Saiful Islam Ronny of Prothom Alo, Abdus Salam, also from Prothom Alo, and Mahmud Hossain Apu of Al Jazeera and Dhaka Tribune respectively.
Organised at the BRAC Centre in the capital Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam B.Sc handed over the awards as the chief guest.
BRAC's executive director Dr Muhammad Musa, keynote speaker eminent writer and journalist Anisul Hoque, special guests International Organisation of Migration deputy chief of mission Abdu Sattar Esoev, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training Director General Md Salim Reza, BRAC's senior director Asif Saleh and BRAC's migration programme's head Shariful Islam Hasan were also present at the ceremony.
BRAC's Migration Programme has been working in the field since 2006 focusing on skill development of the migrating workers, safe migration and proper utilisation of remittance.
