Thousands of people promoted a cleanliness drive of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) by participating in a symbolic mass cleaning programme on Friday.

Encouraged by the participation of over 15,000 people from different walks of life, DSCC claimed it a Guinness World Record for cleaning the city.

After almost two hour-long programme stretching from Golap Shah Mazar to Purana Paltan in the capital, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said the mass participation of people in the sweeping programme met the Guinness Book requirements to set a new world record.

Wearing white cap, a number of celebrities, politicians, businessmen, government officials, urban planners, law-enforcers and media personalities came to participate in the symbolic cleaning drive in the morning before marching towards the 300-meter-long street.

According to the registration book of DSCC, a total of 15,313 people registered their names for the cleaning drive, and many of them brought cleaning materials like - broom.

Chief Election Commissioner K M Nurul Huda, popular film-star Riaz, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, and Gazi Group Chairman Gazi Golam Dastagir were, among others, present at the event.

"We want to dedicate the achievement to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Making a world record was not, however, our intention. We wanted to create awareness on cleanliness among our citizens," said the DSCC mayor.

The auditors of Guinness Book of World Records were also present on the occasion.

DSCC with the help of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh Ltd organised the programme with the slogan "Dettol Porichchhonno (Clean) Dhaka."

Mentioning the previous record set by India's Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) last year, where more than 5,000 people took part, the mayor said now Dhaka can claim the record following the presence of higher number of participants.

But, Dhaka will have to wait for getting the recognition of the new world record, as the city will have to apply formally to Guinness Book of World Records.

Subsequently, the record management team will run comprehensive checks on the evidence to confirm whether one has achieved the record title, and it could take up to two weeks to respond, according to Guinness World Records website.

DSCC later called upon the city dwellers to clean their houses and respective areas at their own initiatives to make Dhaka a cleaner and healthier city.
