487 people die, 679 hurt in July

As many as 487 people were killed and 679 injured in 452 road accidents across the country in July, according to a report of the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) - published on Thursday.

Of the dead, 63 were women and 71 children, while 156 people died in 177 motorcycle accidents, which was 32.03 per cent of the total death toll.

Motorcycle accident rate was 39.15 per cent of the total accidents. As many as 113 pedestrians were killed in the accidents, which was 23.20 per cent of the total fatalities. A total of 68 people, 13.96 per cent of the total deaths, were vehicle drivers and assistants.

In July, eight people were killed, 11 injured, and three went missing in six boat accidents, whereas 18 were killed and six injured in 19 rail accidents.

The RSF prepared the report based on the news published in nine national dailies, seven online news portals, various electronic media, and its own data.

According to its monitoring and analysis, 161 accidents (35.61 per cent) occurred on national highways, 189 (41.81 per cent) on regional roads, 62 (13.71 per cent) on rural roads, 36 (7.96 per cent) on city roads, and four (0.88 per cent) occurred elsewhere.

Of the total, 114 accidents (25.22 per cent) occurred in Dhaka division, in which 116 people were killed. Of the total, 15 people were killed and 21 injured in 28 road accidents in the capital.
