CHATTOGRAM, June 02: Work to complete the Tk 10.36 billion (Tk 1,036.3 crore) Bhandal Jhuri Water Treatment Project of Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) is going on in full swing after several months of stoppage due to coronavirus outbreak last year.

Project Director (PD) Engineer Mahbubul Alam said, more than 50 per cent of work of the project has been completed.

Launched in October 2015, the project was scheduled to be implemented by September last year but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the authorities to briefly halt the work and put back the schedule of completing the project by several months.

Mr Alam said: "The work was hampered by coronavirus outbreak earlier. But, now, the work is continuing even amid the lockdown," he said.

Once implemented, some 60 million litres of water will be supplied to CWASA reservoirs, being built at Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), from the Bhandal Jhuri Water Treatment Project in Boalkhali, officials said.

"After the project is completed, the southern part of Chattogram will be under CWASA's water supply network," they said.

The plant is being built on 41.26 acres of land at Bhandal Jhuri in Jeshthyapura under Boalkhali thana to meet the growing demand for water in the port city. It aims to supply water to 11,000 new clients, including those in KEPZ and surrounding areas in the southern part of Chattogram on the left side of river Karnaphuli.
